Rock Steady Brilliant Advice From My Bipolar Life Ellen Forney Books Reviews
- For the price of a copay, more or less, you can buy both Marbles and Rock Steady. If you're bipolar you will benefit from both books and recommend them to all of your fellow travelers. Rock Steady could have been called Rock Solid because the information she imparts is right on the money and way more fun and interesting than going down a dry checklist on Web MD. Let an artist guide you and make you laugh at the same time. I always recommend books by Kay Redfield Jamison, Martha Manning, Ellen Forney, and William Styron.
Take care of yourself. - I lead a large bipolar group on your favorite blue social media site and I rarely have resources I recommend to the group so highly as this one. No matter it you're newly diagnosed, a bipolar scholar, or just seeking to understand the bipolaroid mind, there's something here for you. It's wall to wall information of the most practical variety, presented in an accessible, fun-to-read way. 11/10.
- This is the most helpful advice I have ever received. I’ve had some great therapists but this is an amazing guide for managing my brain. I painted the SMEDMERTSS list on my medicine cabinet. I keep this guide on my kindle. She has given me perspective and hope. The comic book style is brilliant and makes sense for dealing with a bipolar life.
- Written in graphic format, like a comic book, and full of funny comments about herself, this is a readable collection of steps and routines addressing the emotional swings that are bipolar disorder. Specific ways to use your fingers in rhythm with your breathing can be applied to anyone managing highs lows and anxiety. Created an acronym for the aspects of self care that are useful as a daily checklist.
- Absolutely solid advice i wish i had when i was going through the worst of it. Feeling prepared for any rough times ahead! That's a big deal. I am going to send a copy to my therapist so she can share this with her other clients. Not preachy, realistic, and uses profanity (which i find super authentic and endearing). Loved Marbles, which was delicious and raw and such an entertaining read. This is interesting, keeps you going chapter to chapter, and very, very clear with info/ citations/ accurate illustrations of abstract ideas and feelings. I can't say enough positive things about this, so I'll leave it at that.
- A family member was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Author/illustrator Ellen Forney helped us understand and make sense of what we have been seeing for so long. This diagnosis, along with the information we gained from this graphic novel formatted book gives us hope that things can turn around and that one day, our family member too can be Rock Steady.
- Rock Steady is wonderful for either bi-polar or depression (you'll have a few differences from the bipolar recommendations). COMPLETELY NON-PREACHY. So much less cloying than other self help or self management books. Along with Marbles, so funny and readable, you could almost send it to that friend who doesn't know they really need it. Blessings on Ellen Fornay's head.
- This book continues to shape my bipolar journey (diagnosed 24 years ago). I've shared it with my partner and some family members and even talked about some passages with my psychiatrist. Forney's stories and insights have helped me come to terms with a few things about my bipolar. The art and writing are both superb.
