Darcy Overhears Large Print Edition A Pride Prejudice Large Print Novel Variation Zoe Burton 9781728702674 Books Reviews
- A delightful, funny, light and airy book.
Loved the camaraderie between Darcy, Bingley and Hurst. Never seen it done quite like this before.
Enters after the first encounter with Wickham in the streets of Meryton.
Wickham was quite busy in this story and even engaged the locals in his endeavour to ruin Elizabeth's reputation.
Loved this portrait of Elizabeth, she was perceptive and I like that trait in her.
I also prefer it when it is not so much adversity between ODC but rather than them against the world as it was in this story. The gossips of Meryton had a lot of water on their mill and true friends were few and far between.
The villains was dealt with in a very satisfying way though.
Ends with an epilogue with a couple of surprises.
Recommend! - Interesting what-ifs in the story. Wickham is overheard plotting to ruin Lizzy to get at Darcy.
The level of writing was poor though. With no angst and very soon after the assembly, Darcy and Lizzy are in love, engaged, quite the couple. Things gallup along at a fast pace with no time for any character development.
Enough happens in the story that this would have been a good novel. As a short novella though it read as a poor young adult story. I can’t recommend it. - I really liked the story. In fact, I was so engrossed in it that I didn't notice all of the grammatical errors and missing quote marks. I really liked what she did with Hurst. He still likes his food, drink, and sleep, but he isn't sleeping as much as his companions think he is and he has a sharp mind and is articulate. Jane is witty and a force, though not overbearing. This Elizabeth seems to be more circumspect and prone to think things out. The dialog is well done and has force. At the end of the story, there is real content within and the characters make excellent points in a story about forgiveness and the price of it.
- Another great story by Zoe Burton. Darcy is struggling with his feelings about Elizabeth Bennet, but when he happens to overhear his arch enemy, George Wickham, threatening to ruin Elizabeth, it is all Bingley and Hurst can do to keep him in the carriage. Going to her lackadaisical father, leaves his head swimming. He then talks directly to Elizabeth. She takes him seriously and institutes that the sisters are never to be alone. Angry that he can not physically ruin her, Wickham resorts to another method, and dupes a rejected suitor to ruin her reputation all over Meryton. Not knowing what has happened, the Bennet girls walk to town. When everyone refuses to talk to them and Lizzy is proposition by two farmers, the horrible tale is spread. The men, Darcy, Richard, Hurst, and Bingley are dealing with Wickham's removal from Meryton, but Caroline has heard the terrible rumors, burns Darcy's notes to Longbourn, and decides they should return to London. Loved the relationship between Mr. Hurst and the other men. Was not a drunkard, he could not stand Caroline. When he puts his foot down on his wife, Caroline is on her own. When Darcy realizes that she's stolen his mail, she is thoroughly set down and disowned. When Darcy finds out what Wickham has done and who the perpetrator was, his penance is to recant his lies to the entire town. It was sad that even her mother, her Aunt, and Charlotte believed the awful rumors. Rather difficult to forgive and forget. They marry within days by special license and leave Meryton behind. The refused suitor does make restitution for his lies and becomes a good citizen in Meryton.
- An inventive and well written Variation. However author should have read through it one more time before publishing to catch and correct glaring inconsistencies in story. As other reviewers have noted they are many and as a reader you have to correct them in your head and wonder why the author didn’t correct them.
- While straying far from cannon, all the characters were believable and true to Austin’s origins. All it took was overhearing one statement to change the whole plot.
- Mr Bennet’s indolence is not consistent, which strains credulity. In addition, Mr Goulding claims Mrs Bennet doesn’t approve of him because his family leases their property. This is not consistent with her opinion of Bingley, whom she worships when he leases Netherfield. Finally, the characters are mighty slow to add two and two.
- I really enjoyed this book. The writing in the begging was a little off, but as the story continued, it improved. The plot was very good, and very different from other p&p books. The love story was still very good. Overall a very enjoy book.
