• I have read all of Helen MacInnes' books. This one is a bit different than the majority of hers. However, she still carries you along with her characters and doesn't disappoint.
• She is a gifted writer but romance only works for her as a side plot. So many of her stories are clever this one is absent. The characters are believable but the heroine least of all. An early effort i would guess; the end is weak but too sad for young readers. Skip it
• This is a very different Helen MacInnes book. This one is much more of a psychological novel. Even so, it is beautifully written, makes sense, and I cried at the end. Ms. MacInnes really knows how to make her characters believable. I really, really hope she didn't have personal experience with the people in this novel. It's just too sad … but it is beautiful … and you shouldn't miss it.
• Too dark. Every one ends up badly. No one wins.
• Spoiler alert, the ending while realistic was really unexpected! And not in a good way. A well done glimpse in the intrigues and intricacies of Washington politics in the Cold War era.
• I was delighted to buy this book by an author I collect. I was introduced to MacInnes by my aunt, who had collected all of her books in paperback. Well, I read and reread them all so much the paperbacks began to fall apart, so I was delighted to find them in hardcover. Love her books!
