"This book is one of the nicer makeup books to look at. Its good on the basics and isn't a textbook like introduction. It shows you how to apply foundation(probably the most important and emphasized part of the book) for different face shapes. Also how to apply eye shadow for different types of eyes as well. I found all the advice was good and can be helpful immediately.
One of the best part is the before and after of non-models and models. You get an idea of how he contours the face and works the makeup. A good starting tutorial or for picking up tips. Who knew you need three shades of foundation to highlight and contour your face? It made a difference immediately and looks natural."

- The Robert Jones books are basically the same, with the model pictures rearranged. So, if you like one of his books and purchase it, rest assured it's almost identical to all his other ones. Now having pointed that out, I do like RJ's makeup style. The beautiful results from his application techniques are wonderful for special occasions and events. You can dial down some of the techniques for everyday wear. Overall, I liked the book, and since great techniques rarely expire, I understand why the RJ books are almost identical; just wish I'd known that before purchasing more than one...because one is all that's needed.
- I've owned this book for two years. I'm the kind of person that strives to look great without makeup and I live on a tropical Island where foundations and mascara melt away. But I wanted to finally learn how to put makeup on without looking like a clown. Granted the models in the book look a bit "plastic" and unfortunately the pictures look "photo-shopped". However, the book is filled with step by step illustrated guides and diagrams. The text is easy to understand. I enjoyed the many photos of real women transformed with makeup and the thorough guide of how and why he achieved each look. I give it 5 stars because of the thorough job the author has done and for the fact that I learned a lot about the shape of my face, eyes and mouth and why my makeup always made me look old and sick when I applied it. The book is really geared towards the suburban or city women who want to look best in their hard-working lives in air-conditioned environments(whether at home or working a full-time job). I would have appreciated a bit more makeup instructions on how to apply it for women who live their lives outdoors and more looks on how to look good at night (for functions etc).
- i really enjoyed this book...he does not promote any line over another. there are great pictures of all sorts of women. i appreciated the diversity that was present that you don't get i a lot of makeup books. there's diversity in ethnicity, age, weight (there are some pics of heavier women), etc. i enjoyed learning about why you do or don't do certain things based on your features. the final products are women that are still beautiful but not fake. they don't look like they have a ton of makeup on. i definitely think i could recreate some of the looks in this book. if you want to learn more about applying makeup beautifully then add this to your collection!

I have been to school for this, worked for Merle Norman, Mac, Prescriptives, Clinique, and Lancome. I now work for myself as an Independent Beauty Consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics, and this book has helped me really refine my skills as an artist.
There is no retouching, and no trickery, his techniques are straightforward and simple. The before and after pictures are astounding, I appreciate that Jones brings out the beautiful in each woman, without striving to make her look artificial, or like someone else.
The book starts at the very beginning, with a chapter on "True Beauty" and "Getting Ready", followed by a glossary of terms, and he goes through the different types of product options, color choices, skin tones, face shapes, and SO much more, all with fantastic clarity and detail.

If you are only going to have one book on Makeup Makeovers, this is the ONE you MUST HAVE!!!!!
If I could give it more stars I would. - I bought this book sight unseen from . I was nervous. I had gotten his Wedding makeup book out of the library and was not impressed with how light it was on content. I had read some bad reviews. And I've previously purchased books from sight unseen and been very disappointed. However I decided to listen to the good reviews on and I am glad I did.
This really is one of the best books on makeup I have seen. The only other book that has impressed me is Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual and I think that is another must have.
While his other Wedding book lacked content, this has heaps of it. I love how he describes eye shapes, face shapes, contouring etc. I love that his makeup is natural but beautiful. I have read other books like Rae Morris and although the theory side of her book is good, I just don't want to duplicate any of the eye makeup styles that she shows - it's too 'out there' and for fashion. While Robert Jones book has great makeup for everyday, glamour or bridal.
Some reviewers had complained about the badly over photoshopped images. I didn't feel that they were that bad, yes they had some retouching but it wasn't so bad that it looked like they were mannequins and it didn't turn me off. The photography in this book is just beautiful.
Some of the things that would have improved this book is if he had added the 4 styles of eye makeup he shows in his wedding book (it was the only worthwhile 4 pages in that book). And if he mentioned brands, or if he could sell his own brand of makeup so that we could exactly duplicate the looks in his book.
If you are going to buy one Robert Jones book then buy this one.
