Ebook The Life of WalattaPetros A SeventeenthCentury Biography of an African Woman Concise Edition Galawdewos Wendy Laura Belcher Michael Kleiner Books
This is the student teaching edition of a book translated into English for the first time, The Life of Walatta-Petros (1672), which tells the story of an Ethiopian saint who lived from 1592 to 1642 and led a successful nonviolent movement to preserve African Christian beliefs in the face of European protocolonialism. This is the oldest-known book-length biography of an African woman written by Africans before the nineteenth century, and one of the earliest stories of African resistance to European influence. Written by her disciples after her death, The Life of Walatta-Petros praises her as a friend of women, a devoted reader, a skilled preacher, and a radical leader, providing a rare picture of the experiences and thoughts of Africans―especially women―before the modern era. In addition to an authoritative and highly readable translation, this edition, which omits the notes and scholarly apparatus of the hardcover, features a new introduction aimed at students and general readers.

"I heard about this book from the Guardian article about it. Not only does it really destroy stereotypes about African women as weak, but also reveals how layered our understanding of love, strength and faith should be!! Not to mention the bonus of a non-Eurocentric interpretation and focus. More please!"

- If you've been taught African literature didn't start until Chinua Achebe wrote Things Fall Apart in 1958 or that there is no pre-colonial written record of African women, this book will change that. I read the hardcover version of this translation when it came out in 2015 and have shared parts of it with my students (undergraduate and graduate, historical global literature) to great success. The affordability and critical framing of this version will enable me to include the whole text on the syllabus in the future.
