An Charts and Washington Post bestseller.

For fans of Tom Clancy and Lee Child, a heart-pumping thriller of betrayal, revenge, and conspiracy by USA Today bestselling author Steven Konkoly.

Former CIA operative turned mercenary for hire Ryan Decker’s specialty is rescuing kidnap victims. Hired by an influential US senator to liberate her daughter from a human-trafficking ring, Decker never anticipated sabotage or that the assault could go so disastrously wrong. The hostage is dead. His team is wiped out, and so are their families, including Decker’s own wife and son—eliminated one by one by the Russian mafia. And he’s survived to take the fall.

When he’s inexplicably freed soon into a ten-year sentence in federal prison, Decker suspects another setup. And private investigator Harlow Mackenzie knows he’s right. She has evidence that a power greater than the Russian mob was behind the raid that ruined Decker’s life.

The next move in a nationwide cat-and-mouse game of high-level sedition is up to them. Fueled by revenge and an obsession to clear his name, Decker has only one mission to destroy a growing conspiracy before it’s too late.

Ebook The Rescue Ryan Decker Book 1 edition by Steven Konkoly Literature Fiction eBooks

"This mesmerizing, twisty-turny story was an absolute joy to read. The author has used his considerable (and specialized) military knowledge to build a masterfully layered plot with tortured hero Ryan Decker front and center. There is a plethora of wrong-doings Decker's character is compelled to make right. This thrilling first book in the author's new action-driven series tackles issues including the child sex-trade industry in the United States. Honestly, it kept me turning the pages until the very end."

The Rescue Ryan Decker Book 1 edition by Steven Konkoly Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews :

The Rescue Ryan Decker Book 1 edition by Steven Konkoly Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • The Rescue is the only First Read option out of six this month that is not either an introspective emotional journey of trauma and drama or the saga of an underdog’s empowerment (henceforth “angst-based drivel” or ABD). For that, it earns 5-stars from me, plus it’s a decent story. Many months, First Read doesn’t even offer one non-ABD option. Why did First Read become the launching pad of its usual drivel? Why not mainline history, Sci-Fi, politics, or heck even cooking or skill building?
  • Did not read it. The language was inappropriate. I cannot read books with the f*** word used so much. Should be able to write adventure books without that, or similar, words.
  • Steven Konkoly shines with this new thriller that hits the ground running. A complex thriller that satisfies the want for fast-paced action and a well-told story, THE RESCUE, is a must-read.

It immediately drops the reader into a well-drawn world of betrayal, revenge, and redemption. Ryan Decker is a flawed, relatable hero unstoppable in his drive to right every wrong.

Konkoly writes with such skill, the reader is there on the streets with hero Decker as he hunts for justice.

A brilliant story worthy of a long series.
  • I've been a long time reader of Mr. Konkoly, and always been impressed how his books drop you right in the middle of the action from page one. He has a unique talent for drawing you into the story without sacrificing other characteristics of great writing including character development and accurate, detailed environments.

This new series... wow, what an accomplishment. Ryan Decker is fantastic new protagonist that rivals Mitch Rapp, Jack Reacher, and even Jack Ryan. While murder, betrayal, and revenge may seem like an easy trifecta to write to, Mr. Konkoly does it with such realism and engagement that you can't help but get attached to the characters.

Every book he's written is always so well researched, that while the characters are fictional, the environments and situations that he puts them are laced with such detail that you can't help be feeling as if you're right there with Decker, looking over his shoulder. This can only be accomplished by putting in the effort to research every little detail, a true hallmark of Konkoly books.

I can't wait to read the next one.
  • When I first read the synopsis of The Rescue, I was not very interested in it for some reason. Not sure why. Since I have read and really enjoyed all of Konkoly's other books, I decided to give this a chance, and I'm glad I did.

The Rescue starts with Ryan Decker and his team trying to save a senator's daughter that was kidnapped when he wasn't supposed to be able to find her. His team gets setup, and he takes the blame. He goes to prison and loses everything.
After some time in prison, Decker gets help from an unexpected group and goes after those responsible as they are trying to eliminate him.

As with Konkoly's other series, I am now impatiently waiting on the follow up to The Rescue. I am happy that I decided to read this, and you will be as well.
  • If you are into this genre (Greaney, Coes, Eisler, Berenson, etc..) dont think twice about picking this one up.

A LOT happens in the first chapter or two and its slightly confusing. KEEP READING..it all comes together brilliantly. As usual, great characters, clearly a ton of research went into the subject matter and the action scenes (like all of his books) do not disappoint. Would argue that he and Greaney are top 2 in this genre as far as their abilities to incorporate their tactical knowledge into scenes that are so high adrenaline you cant do anything but shake your head and marvel. Finished in 2 days...stuck waiting for the next one!
  • This mesmerizing, twisty-turny story was an absolute joy to read. Honestly, it kept me turning the pages until the very end.
  • Ryan Decker is framed, sent to prison, and then mysteriously released early only to begin a race to stay alive. He’s a dead man walking until he can uncover and expose the people who framed him. Plenty of action and twists to keep you reading late into the night. Definitely a must read.

ormai morente e destinato a scomparire.
Dai nebbiosi e oscuri mari del Nord, Costantino approderà oltre la Manica,
sconvolgendo l'impero nel tentativo di fare della Britannia l'epicentro
di un mondo nuovo, fondato sulle ceneri di Roma.

As the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing approaches, the award-winning historian and perennial New York Times best-selling author takes a fresh look at the space program, President John F. Kennedy's inspiring challenge, and America's race to the moon.

"We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win." (President John F. Kennedy)

On May 25, 1961, JFK made an astonishing announcement his goal of putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade. In this engrossing, fast-paced epic, Douglas Brinkley returns to the 1960s to recreate one of the most exciting and ambitious achievements in the history of humankind. American Moonshot brings together the extraordinary political, cultural, and scientific factors that fueled the birth and development of NASA and the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo projects, which shot the US to victory in the space race against the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War.

Drawing on new primary source material and major interviews with many of the surviving figures who were key to America's success, Brinkley brings this fascinating history to life as never before. American Moonshot is a portrait of the brilliant men and women who made this giant leap possible, the technology that enabled us to propel men beyond earth's orbit to the moon and return them safely, and the geopolitical tensions that spurred Kennedy to commit himself fully to this audacious dream. Brinkley's ensemble cast of New Frontier characters include rocketeer Wernher von Braun, astronaut John Glenn, and space booster Lyndon Johnson.

A vivid and enthralling chronicle of one of the most thrilling, hopeful, and turbulent eras in the nation's history, American Moonshot is an homage to scientific ingenuity, human curiosity, and the boundless American spirit.

American Moonshot John F Kennedy and the Great Space Race Audible Audio Edition Douglas Brinkley Stephen Graybill HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • This book has the following fact errors, among many others

Page 147 “Television cameras carried images [of the Vanguard TV-3 launch] nationwide on CBS and NBC, beginning a tradition of live coverage for rocket launches that would last into the 1970s…” and “…with millions watching as the Vanguard TV-3 took off…” There was no TV coverage of this launch; the first live TV coverage of a launch was October 11, 1958.

Page 157 “Measuring just 6.4 inches in diameter, Explorer wasn’t very sophisticated or large—Nikita Khrushchev famously derided it as the ‘grapefruit satellite’...” Khrushchev, however, was referring to Vanguard 1, launched March 17, 1958. Explorer was 6.4 inches in diameter, but also more than six feet long.

Page 182 “…as Administrator Keith Glennan addressed a packed press briefing, a curtain was pulled open, revealing the seven astronauts…” There was no curtain.

Page 202 “…Echo 1 functioned as a kind of orbital mirror, bouncing radio-television beams off the Earth’s surface…” First, radio waves were bounced off of Echo, not the Earth’s surface. Second, it only was tested using radio signals and voice, but no television or video.

Page 204 Caption First, this photo is not from the October 21st Kennedy-Nixon debate, but rather from the September 25th debate; second, three of the four debates were in October, not all four as the caption states.

Page 211 “Five generations of rockets—starting with the early Vanguard, and then onward with ICBMs like Atlas, were born in the Eisenhower years...” Redstone (1950), Atlas (1953), Jupiter (1954) and Thor (Jan. 1957) all preceded Vanguard (Oct. 1957).

Page 211 “There were all sorts of weather satellites...” The only type of weather satellite at the time was the TIROS series; three (which only had different cameras) had been launched.

Page 240 “Seeing that capsule [Freedom 7] land in the Atlantic was one of the greatest thrills of Kennedy’s life.” This would not have been possible, as there was no live TV coverage of Shepard's recovery.

Page 241 “Kennedy played host to Shepard for the rest of that day…” They were only together until 11 am.

Page 242 A Shepard quote about Kennedy is said to refer their conversation at the White House, but actually refers to his post-flight phone call from the president.

Page 246 A photo from Kennedy’s first State of the Union speech in January is wrongly identified as from his May 25 speech to Congress.

Page 264 A photo from Kennedy’s October 1962 visit to Cape Canaveral is wrongly identified as being in Huntsville.

Photo page 11 Full-page color photo identified as Gordon Cooper aboard Faith 7. The photo is actually of a mannequin in a Gemini spacecraft.

Page 283 “Back in 1957, when JFK was deriding failed Vanguard launches…” On page 145, however, it states that “Kennedy didn’t comment on” the only Vanguard launch attempt that year (December).

Page 285 “[FDR’s fireside chats] between 1933 and 1945…” They ended in June 1944.

Page 296 “...a specially enlarged airplane, known as the ‘Super Guppy,’ to carry the third stage...”. This first aircraft was the Pregnant Guppy; the Super Guppy did not enter service until 1965.

Page 300 “Other scientific evidence collected by NASA during the Kennedy years proved that Mars [was a dead planet].” The first US Mars probe was launched in 1964 and returned data in 1965.

Page 326 “Later that day, at a White House Rose Garden ceremony...” (followed by a Kennedy quote) and “the president said with Glenn by his side.” First, there was no Rose Garden ceremony that day (it was rainy); and second, the quote is from Kennedy’s comments to the media on February 20th.

Page 336 “…the three-stage Saturn V rocket would stand 363 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty.” It was 58 feet taller; the Saturn itself was 363 feet tall.

Page 380 “Schirra reported back to Mercury Control everything he did or encountered, his voice relayed via the Telstar satellite to TV and radio audiences around the world.” Telstar only relayed a videotape playback of the launch to Britain and France, not coverage of the mission; nor around the world.

Page 402 “In early May, the president made a return visit to Huntsville for an earthshaking static firing of a Saturn booster stage.” The firing took place during his September 11, 1962 visit.

Page 405 “Pointing to his Oval Office rocking chair...” and “…their informal Oval Office chat...” This meeting was in the Yellow Oval Room on the second floor of the White House.

Page 412 Caption states November 18; this is actually November 16. Caption also refers to "USS Observational Island"; correct name is Observation Island.

Page 437 “As for the law firm orchestrating the construction of the Manned Spacecraft Center, it was, no surprise —Brown and Root...” Brown and Root was an industrial services contractor, not a law firm.

Page 441 “While Glenn lost in 1964, he eventually ended up serving in the Senate...” Glenn withdrew from his Senate race in 1964; he lost his primary in 1970.

Page 443 “...Gemini VIII in 1965...” Gemini VIII was in 1966.

Page 447 Caption refers to Apollo 11’s “mobile launch platform” instead of correct name, “mobile launcher.” The date (“May 17”) is incorrect; rollout was May 20.

Page 452 “Grissom was buried…not far from [Kennedy’s] eternal flame…” Grissom’s gravesite is more than half-a-mile to the south.

Page 452 “Only in late 1967, when the Soviets’ N1 rocket blew up on the pad, killing Russian engineers and designers, did the Kremlin stop competing.” First, the N1 pad explosion was in 1969; second, no fatalities were reported; and third, the N1 program continued into early 1974.

Page 458 References LM’s “descent engines” (plural). The LM had a single descent engine.
  • Fun to read history of my time as I grew to adulthood. It was a family adventure. BTW...Leroy Gordon Cooper was born and raised in a Shawnee Oklahoma. Not California as indicated on pg 403.
  • Though the release of this book is timed to coincide with the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, it is in reality a Presidential biography of John F. Kennedy through the lens of the space race of the 1950s and 60s. It brilliantly places JFK in the time, place and context of an era where American achievement and prestige on the world stage is in question following early Soviet technological triumphs.

This book pulls back the curtain using archival sources - including JFK's hidden tape recording system installed in the White House - to reveal his deliberative processes that ultimately led him to make his bold declaration in 1961 of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. In this day and age, when elected officials make grandiose promises which remain unfulfilled and thus ultimately ring hollow in our ears virtually before the politician is finished speaking, it is startling to read how JFK's summons to the moon galvanized America's citizens, its government leaders, and, most importantly, its budget appropriators into sustained action in single-minded pursuit of that goal.

Characters of the era vividly come to life as flesh-and-blood humans, including the Mercury 7 astronauts, the early, fabled leaders of NASA, Lyndon Johnson and others. But brought most vividly to life were JFK and Wernher von Braun, probably the two most central figures in the audacious goal of a lunar landing before the end of the 1960s. Fortunately, Mr. Brinkley, though clearly editorializing, does not flinch from properly characterizing von Braun's contribution to manned spaceflight in the larger context of his Nazi past and complicity in war crimes, reminding us that the man was no hero. Kennedy, on the other hand, is revealed as the thoughtful, deliberate, highly intelligent, galvanizing leader he was. Even though we all know how JFK's story ended, when we are met with his sudden and violent death on a Dallas street, you feel a personal sense of loss that a great mind and inspiring leader was removed from the scene in such a ignominious manner; this book makes you yearn for what else might have come from this brilliant man who was taken from us at only 46.

The Apollo program and the 1969 moon landing are rather quickly wrapped up in an epilogue after JFK's death, so if you are looking for a history of the Apollo program, this isn't it, but nor was it meant to be. This book brilliantly reminds us of JFK's rightful place in space history as the driving force and inspiration for one of mankind's greatest adventures, and makes it clear that if anyone other than Kennedy had been president in the first years of the 1960s, our history would have turned out very differently, proving that the character and wisdom of the person in the Oval Office truly matters.

I highly recommend this book and enjoyed it thoroughly.
  • This was a good review of Kennedy's involvement in the space race. Only covers the Kennedy years but a lot of background information I was previously unaware of. Recommended.
  • Dr. Brinkley puts a well thought out and captivating story about an era that ends in triumph and not tragedy like most events in history. It was fascinating to read about how women were also physically and mentally tested to become astronauts and compared to their male counterparts. These women, who were called the Mercury 13, were part of the many unsung heroes in our race to the moon. The book also challenges the reader and society to wonder What will be the next moonshot?....What leader or event will unite societies to bring about a triumph in today’s age?”
  • According to , American Moonshot John F. Kennedy and the Great Space is WhisperSync capable. I purchased the audible version with it, only to find its not whispersync’d.
  • This is a fantastic read. The idea of a “moonshot” project - a bipartisan push for a shared and worthy goal - is a vivid reminder of what a united America can accomplish as a nation in such a circumstance. Brinkley’s book begs the question of whether we will be able to do it again, and to what end. Looking at the obstacles that had to be overcome some 50 years ago - detailed superbly in the book - against the backdrop of current events, one has to wonder. But the book reveals enough of a blueprint and showcases the type of human optimism that certainly still exists to let the reader contemplate the next great moonshot.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The intimate, inspiring, and authoritative biography of Sandra Day O’Connor, America’s first female Supreme Court justice, drawing on exclusive interviews and first-time access to Justice O’Connor’s archives—by the New York Times bestselling author Evan Thomas.

“She’s a hero for our time, and this is the biography for our time.”—Walter Isaacson

She was born in 1930 in El Paso and grew up on a cattle ranch in Arizona. At a time when women were expected to be homemakers, she set her sights on Stanford University. When she graduated near the top of her law school class in 1952, no firm would even interview her. But Sandra Day O’Connor’s story is that of a woman who repeatedly shattered glass ceilings—doing so with a blend of grace, wisdom, humor, understatement, and cowgirl toughness.

She became the first ever female majority leader of a state senate. As a judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals, she stood up to corrupt lawyers and humanized the law. When she arrived at the United States Supreme Court, appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, she began a quarter-century tenure on the Court, hearing cases that ultimately shaped American law. Diagnosed with cancer at fifty-eight, and caring for a husband with Alzheimer’s, O’Connor endured every difficulty with grit and poise.

Women and men who want to be leaders and be first in their own lives—who want to learn when to walk away and when to stand their ground—will be inspired by O’Connor’s example. This is a remarkably vivid and personal portrait of a woman who loved her family, who believed in serving her country, and who, when she became the most powerful woman in America, built a bridge forward for all women.

Praise for First

“Cinematic . . . poignant . . . illuminating and eminently readable . . . First gives us a real sense of Sandra Day O’Connor the human being. . . . Thomas gives O’Connor the credit she deserves.”The Washington Post

“[A] fascinating and revelatory biography . . . a richly detailed picture of [O’Connor’s] personal and professional life . . . Evan Thomas’s book is not just a biography of a remarkable woman, but an elegy for a worldview that, in law as well as politics, has disappeared from the nation’s main stages.”The New York Times Book Review

"While I was reading this book, I saw that author Evan Thomas mentioned Joan Biskupic's biography of Sandra Day O'Connor (titled Sandra Day O'Connor) as a source (one of many sources) while writing the book. I found a copy of that bio, first published in late 2005, and read both books, comparing as I went along. Both writers make an effort to portray O'Connor as more than a Supreme Court Justice, going into her childhood and career before the Supreme Court. Both authors did interview O'Connor, although Biskupic's interviews were conducted as part of her reporting on the Court, while Thomas interviewed O'Connor after her retirement specifically for the biography. Thomas's biography included some sources that Biskupic didn't have access to such as John O'Connor's (Sandra Day O'Connor's husband) unpublished memoir and his diaries. Thomas also discusses O'Connor's life after her retirement, while Biskupic's book ends just as O'Connor is retiring from the Supreme Court. Thomas interviewed many, nearly all, of O'Connor's law clerks from her Supreme Court years, giving a little extra insight into her day to day activities at the Court.

Still, I came away thinking that if you had to choose between the two books, you might do better to read Biskupic's than Thomas's. For instance, Biskupic showed how O'Connor had been political well before her rise through the court system -- she had even lobbied Nixon to nominate a woman to the Supreme Court (she endorsed a colleague, but it's easy to believe she thought she herself might also be a good candidate) and had been active in Republican politics since serving on Barry Goldwater's presidential campaign. Biskupic was also more descriptive about William Rehnquist's views on race, leaving the reader with little doubt that he had racist views, while Evan Thomas glosses over the subject with a footnote mentioning rumors of racist behavior. This was relevant to a book about O'Connor because Rehnquist and O'Connor were very close (even romantically close at one point in their college years) and decided almost identically during O'Connor's first years on the Supreme Court, although as time went on, she broke with the conservative bloc more often. The Bush v Gore decision comes across as a shockingly poor judicial decision in both books.

Both books are full of interesting inside the court information as well as fascinating analysis of court cases and how they were decided."

  • Given all the recent adulation of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, I was wondering if everyone was just going to skip over the "First." Sandra Day O'Connor preceded RBG by 12 years, and was the trailblazer who opened the way for women to break up the all-boys club of the Supreme Court.

Evan Thomas's biography is addictively readable! I started reading at about 930 at night and kept telling myself, "Just one more page!" Well, 405 pages later, I was closing the book, fully read. I didn't look at the clock! Mr. Thomas has interviewed not only Justice O'Connor, but seemingly everyone in her life, from childhood through her senior years. What emerges is a fully rounded portrait of a child, a student, a career woman, a wife, mother, employer, friend and neighbor, as well as a groundbreaker on the Supreme Court. Justice O'Connor is a multi-faceted person who exuded the dignity and fastidiousness of the bench, but also reveled in her personal life, charming everyone with her undivided attention, her wit... and her dancing skills! This fascinating woman, raised on a hardscrabble ranch in Arizona, seemingly felt at home anywhere she and her beloved husband, John, lived, even in the political rat's nest of Washington, D.C.

In this book, not only do you get a full picture of Justice O'Connor, but the author weaves into her story everything you need to know about how the Supreme Court works, what goes on in the so-called "Marble Palace," and the issues Justice O'Connor faced in her tenure -- abortion, affirmative action, sexual harassment, states rights. We get an education about law clerks and what they do. The law clerks who worked for Justice O'Connor are candid about her, suggesting both the good and the bad of working for a person as intense as Sandra Day O'Connor. You want to get on her good side? Show up for her 8 a.m. aerobics class!

Having access to John O'Connor's unpublished diary, and interviews with Justice O'Connor herself, allows the author a keen insight into John and Sandra O'Connor's marriage and into the mighty struggle with Alzheimer's that eventually claimed John's life and descended on hers. It is truly heartbreaking to walk that sad journey with them. Even the brightest stars are no match for this horrible disease.

Mr. Thomas sums up Justice O'Connor, with all her contradictions, this way "She could be charming or brusque. She could be disarmingly straightforward; she could also be roundabout and sly," he writes. "It is difficult to reconcile the 'bossy' O'Connor, who would tell passengers exactly where to sit in a car, with the modest O'Connor, who practiced judicial 'minimalism,' preferring to stick to the facts and let the law slowly evolve rather than making broad pronouncements." In Mr. Thomas's book, all of these sides to Sandra Day O'Connor are fully explored. You'll want to stay up late reading, too!
  • I have read Joan Biskupic’s biography of Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-) and have read O’Connor’s memoirs and other books. Thomas’s book was written after she retired from the Court so contains more information about her later life. Thomas also had access to John O’Connor’s papers, diary and unpublished memoir.

The book is well written and meticulously researched. Thomas interviewed almost all of O’Connor’s law clerks and staff as well as friends and colleagues. I found the information about how each of the male Justices had to adapt (or not) to a female Justice interesting. I found the lunch meeting between O’Connor and Ginsburg most interesting. This meeting took place just after O’Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court and long before Ginsburg was appointed to the Court. Thomas provided a number of insights as well as material not covered in prior books. This book is well worth the read. I noted how far women attorneys have come since the day O’Connor graduated from Stanford Law School and found out that firms would not hire women.

I read this as an e-book on my app for my iPad. There were lots of photographs. I wished I had the photograph with all the women Justices together. The book was 455 pages and published by Random House.
